Mastering the four-stroke with the right hand on the hurdy-gurdy

Hello, I'm Claudia Elmer from drehleieronline.de, and today we'll be looking at an advanced playing technique for the hurdy-gurdy: the four-stroke with the right hand. This technique is particularly important for developing rhythmic variety and flexibility in your playing. It requires precision and some practice.

What is the four-stroke?

The four-stroke is a technique in which the right hand inserts 4 snares in a round. These positions are typically arranged at 1 o'clock, 4 o'clock, 7 o'clock and 10 o'clock and can be played in all imaginable combinations.

Step-by-step guide to the four-stroke

  1. Positioning: Set the crank to position 1 (1 o'clock). It is important that you are sitting comfortably and that your right arm and wrist are loose to ensure precise control of the movements.
  2. The adjustment of the ratchet is now very important. It should be set so that it responds easily when the crank is accelerated, otherwise you will use up too much travel from point to point and the ratchet will sound tiring.
  3. Hand position: Make sure that your shoulder remains relaxed and your wrist is straight. Avoid bending the wrist, as this reduces control over the movements.
  4. Execution of the movement: Start with the first position (1 o'clock) and move the hand in a steady rhythm from one position 2, 3, 4 (4 o'clock, 7 o'clock, 10 o'clock) to the next. You trigger the snares by accelerating them slightly and briefly and reduce them to the original rotational speed (basic speed) immediately after triggering the snare.
  5. Integration of the melody: While practicing the four-beat, you can play a simple melody consisting of four notes played up and down. This helps to coordinate the rhythm and movement. Play one round per note and buzz all 4 positions.

Tips for effective practicing

  • Regularity: Practice the four-stroke regularly to develop the necessary skill and confidence.
  • Motion control: Concentrate on performing the movements smoothly and precisely. The distances in the circle should remain constant to ensure consistent sound quality.
  • Adjustment of the snare: Always set the sensitivity of the ratchet so that it already responds when the crank is turned under slight acceleration in order to make it sound light.
  • Relaxation: Make sure that your hand fits loosely around the knob to ensure sufficient contact for precise control.
